Ask I&A: Counseling Services Available at ADRC

by | Dec 19, 2023 | Blog

Collaborative partners, Foundations Health and Wellness and ADRC, provide critical individual counseling services and group therapy opportunities to address the unmet mental health needs for low-income older adults and adults with disabilities in our community.

Addressing mental health is critical in tackling the root causes of poverty and overall well-being. This opportunity enhances the quality of life and independence for our community members who are seniors and adults with disabilities, as well as their caregivers and extended families.

ADRC hosts a Master’s level, Resident-in-Training Therapist who is pursuing their degree as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. They offer individualized counseling sessions that are meant to be short-term. If long-term counseling or therapy is needed, the therapist will be able to provide referrals for ongoing assistance through an outside agency.

If you are someone who would like to meet with the counselor here at ADRC, please call and ask to speak to an ADRC Specialist who will provide you with more information on the service and make the referral to the counselor.

Below is a testimony of people who have used this service here at ADRC:

“As the Dementia Care Specialist, having counseling services here at the ADRC makes a HUGE difference to my role in many ways! There is no way I would be able to support all of the families and caregivers who could use counseling services alone, nor could our Information and Assistance team. Counseling services being here increases our ability to support people in our area, increase services, and diversify. Counseling services being right here at the ADRC greatly increases accessibility as well. Many of the customers we serve would have a difficult time accessing counseling services if it was outside the ADRC due to a variety of reasons (affordability and comfortability to name a few important ones!). Counseling services being at the ADRC has become an important piece of our team, and one that other agencies across the state look to as an example of person-centered, bio-psycho-social leadership.

Many of the families, caregivers, and individuals living with brain changes work with accessing counseling services because it is here at the ADRC. For these individuals, the addition of counseling services makes critical, positive changes in their lives and their ability to not only cope better but thrive! I have had multiple families share with me how wonderful it is to have those services here, in a place they are familiar and comfortable with. For caregivers and those living with brain changes, comfort and accessibility are key, and they may not utilize the support of a counselor if the services were offered at a different location.”
