Affordable Housing for Seniors and People with Disabilities

by | Jun 29, 2020 | Blog, Housing

Are you an aging adult or person with a disability? Are you struggling to find affordable housing? You might qualify for a subsidized apartment. Federally subsidized apartments in Brown County base the rent you pay on your income. These apartment buildings exist to ensure that people on a limited income (i.e., SSI, SSDI, or SSRE) have access to housing they can afford. Brown County has several buildings within Green Bay as well as rural locations such as Pulaski and Denmark. Many buildings offer 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, and most have accessibility features as well. Some offer opportunities for socialization and activities. A detailed listing can be found on the ADRC website at adrcofbrowncounty.org or by calling our Information and Assistance Specialists at (920) 448-4300.

If you like the idea of affordable housing but would like more flexibility in where you live, the housing choice voucher program, formerly known as Section 8, is another option. This option for Brown County residents is administered through Integrated Community Solutions. If you meet the financial requirements, and your landlord will accept the voucher, you may be eligible. Currently, the income for a single person applying must be at or below $28,650/year and $32,750/year for a couple. With the housing choice voucher you have the option to get rental assistance for apartments, duplexes, or even homes, if qualification standards are met. There is typically a waitlist for this program, so it is important to apply early. More information can be found at ics-gb.org.

The Information and Assistance Specialists at ADRC are happy to talk to you about these options and more. Perhaps you’d like to learn about other independent apartments that are available to people over age 55, or you’re curious about assisted living options.
