ADRC Volunteer Spotlight: Holly Pecard & The Benefits of Volunteering

by | Mar 31, 2023 | Blog, Volunteer

If you’ve visited Grounded Café, you’ve probably seen many smiling faces greeting you behind the counter. One of those smiling faces is Holly Pecard. She began volunteering in the cafe in August 2022. Being a job coach, Holly works closely with many of the students, helping them learn job skills they can use for future employment.

She enjoys working in the café because the people are so nice, it keeps her busy, and the food is delicious. Holly is used to being in a fast-paced environment. She worked as a nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital for 43 years! Now that she’s retired, not only does she volunteer here at Grounded, but she also volunteers her time as a reading buddy at Lincoln School.

When Holly has free time, she enjoys walking and swimming at the Kroc Center. She also loves spending time with her husband, two kids, and granddaughter.

A quote she lives by is, “One day at a time.” We certainly appreciate each day she spends with us!

Did you know, volunteering not only helps others in your community but it is good for your physical and emotional well-being, too! Volunteering is proven to help reduce depression and stress levels, boost self-confidence, and even help you live longer. In fact, a study from Carnegie Mellon university showed that adults over age 50 who volunteered regularly were less likely to develop high blood pressure than non-volunteers.

If you don’t have a ton of extra time to spare but still wish to give back, volunteering is also flexible! Most places are so happy to have someone there to help fill a need they will happily work with your schedule – whether you wish to volunteer a few hours a month or on a full-time basis.

Another great thing about donating your time is the experience you gain and the connections you make. Volunteering is one of the best ways to meet new people, make new friends, and grow relationships with the friends you already have. With each project, you’re united in a common goal, sharing the same passion to help others in your community. Creating good is contagious! As you meet more people and invite friends to join in, they in turn will likely do the same. Working together in a low-stress, flexible environment is the perfect recipe for new volunteer ideas.

Perhaps the best part of volunteering is simply the joy you feel knowing you’re helping others. If you’re not getting a sense of fulfillment in your volunteer role, you can simply move on and try something new. The best place to find your next volunteer opportunity is right here in your community! Reach out to ADRC at (920) 448-4300 or contact the Green Bay Volunteer Center at
